The documents most visitors need

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) says visitors must have a visa to visit Mali ¹. It says the application and payment process is fully online through the Malian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, and an entry permit is issued electronically once approved ¹. The portal is run by the ministry's diplomatic missions and consular posts ⁶.

The Embassy of Mali in India lists the files an applicant uploads. These are a passport copy, a recent photo, a legalised invitation letter or a hotel reservation, a return flight reservation and a copy of the yellow fever vaccination card ⁷. The embassy says other documents may be needed depending on the visa type ⁷.

• A valid passport. The FCDO says entry is refused with a passport reported lost or stolen ¹.
• A visa or electronic entry permit obtained before travel ^1,2.
• A yellow fever vaccination certificate ^1,4.
• The US State Department says one blank page is needed for the entry stamp ³.

Passport validity: the sources differ

Official sources do not give one passport validity rule. The table shows each rule as published. Travellers can check with the Malian mission that handles their application ⁶.

No visa on arrival

The French foreign ministry says a visa cannot be obtained on arrival at Bamako airport ². It says travellers who arrive without one are subject to a non-admission procedure, and the airline that carried them must return them on a later flight ². The US State Department says visas are not available on arrival in Mali ³.

Visas on arrival existed in the past. TourMaG reported on 24 October 2007 that border police authorised 30-day visas at Bamako-Sénou airport for tour operator clients for the 2007 to 2008 season, at 15,000 FCFA ⁹. That arrangement is historical ⁹.

Rules by nationality

US nationals. The Associated Press reported on 30 December 2025 that Mali's foreign ministry barred US citizens from entering Mali with immediate effect, citing reciprocity for a US proclamation of 16 December 2025 that restricted entry for Malian citizens ⁵. Before that, Al Jazeera reported on 12 October 2025 that Mali imposed visa bonds on US citizens matching the US bonds of US$5,000 to US$10,000 placed on Malian business and tourist visa applicants ¹⁰. The US State Department advisory, updated 2 July 2026, says Mali suspended visa issuance to US citizens as of 1 January 2026, with limited exceptions it does not list, and tells travellers to check with the Embassy of Mali ¹¹. This site found no official Malian notice lifting the measure as of 24 October 2026.

Franco-Malian dual nationals. The French foreign ministry says that since 14 January 2024 only a valid Malian passport is accepted for dual nationals who have no visa in their French passport ². It says expired Malian passports are no longer tolerated, and Malian identity cards are not accepted for entry ².

Citizens of ECOWAS states. Mali left ECOWAS on 29 January 2025 ⁸. On that date the ECOWAS Commission asked authorities to keep recognising passports and identity cards with the ECOWAS logo held by Malians, and to keep visa-free movement for them, until further notice ⁸. That statement concerns how ECOWAS members treat Malians. This site did not find an official Malian text on visa rules for ECOWAS nationals.

Customs and exports

The FCDO says Mali has strict rules on goods brought in or taken out, and anything that may be prohibited or taxed must be declared ¹. It says exporting cultural or archaeological objects needs a permit from the Ministry of Arts and Culture, obtained from the director of the National Museum ¹.

Official travel advice

The FCDO advises against all travel to Mali, as stated on its entry requirements page ¹. Canada lists tourist, business and student visas as required before arrival ⁴. Advice changes often. Readers can check each government page by its date.
